Rumors of a shooting that circulated on social media in the Fiske Heights area on Tuesday have been officially debunked by local authorities.

Harriman Police Chief Barron Tapp clarified Wednesday evening that the heavy police response in the Bennett Circle neighborhood stemmed from an innocent misunderstanding.

According to Chief Tapp, a resident called 911 after hearing a sudden, loud noise from another room in her home, fearing it was a gunshot and that her son might be injured. Officers arrived within minutes of the dispatch to investigate.

Upon inspection, police quickly determined that the commotion was caused not by a firearm, but by a bowl or large plate crashing to the floor. The caller had attempted to call 911 back to cancel the alert, but units had already arrived on the scene.

Authorities confirmed that no shooting occurred, no one was injured, and there was never any danger to the public.
