POWER OUTAGES AND DOWNED TREES REPORTED FOLLOWING LATE-NIGHT STORM IN ROANE COUNTY

A rapid and powerful storm swept through Roane County late Tuesday night, leaving a trail of downed trees, snapped utility poles, and power outages in its wake.

The severe weather struck the area at approximately 11:20 p.m., bringing intense winds and frequent lightning. The eastern side of Rockwood bore the brunt of the storm’s impact, with particularly heavy damage reported along East Wheeler Street, Douglas Avenue, Patton Lane, and Ridge Avenue.

On East Wheeler Street, a large tree crashed across the roadway, bringing down live power lines and shattering a utility pole. Rockwood Electric Utility crews labored through the night to restore electricity to affected residents. Additional downed trees were scattered across Douglas Avenue, Rockwood Mountain, and Old Airport Road, prompting emergency road-clearing operations that lasted overnight.

The severe weather also contributed to hazardous driving conditions. Around midnight, emergency personnel—including the Rockwood Fire Department, police, and ambulance crews—responded to a single-vehicle accident where a car struck a tree on Patton Lane near Gracie Way. A separate accident was reported on Interstate 40 westbound near the Kingston exit.

Despite the widespread structural and vehicular impacts, no injuries have been reported.
