INDIANA COUPLE’S CUMBERLAND COUNTY PROPERTY TARGETED IN FRAUDULENT $120,000 LAND SALE ATTEMPT

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a land fraud scheme after an out-of-state couple discovered their vacant property in Cumberland Cove was listed and sold without their knowledge.

According to an incident report filed by Deputy Jordan Winningham, two victims from Danville, Indiana, were alerted by a neighbor who spotted a “for sale” sign on their 8.9-acre lot on Walker Hollow Drive.

Upon checking Realtor.com, the victims found their property listed under MLS# 1351499. The real estate transaction—handled entirely by phone and email through First Realty Company—resulted in a signed contract to sell the land for $120,000 on August 12, 2026. The property is valued at an estimated $230,000.

Real estate agent Shelley Marshall’s office grew suspicious of the transaction’s legitimacy and requested identification from the purported seller. The scammer provided fraudulent photocopies of the victims’ Indiana driver’s licenses via email.

The Cumberland County Deed Office confirmed that the victims remain the rightful owners of the property and that no official changes have been made to the deed.

The investigation into the unknown suspect remains ongoing.
