A forensic anthropology report has solved the mystery behind a box of human bones discovered last month in a Roane County rental home, ruling out foul play and debunking a homeowner’s longstanding family lore.

Property managers cleaning out the garage of a home on West Ridgecrest Drive on July 10 stumbled upon the cardboard box, prompting an immediate 911 call and a joint response by the Kingston Police Department and the Roane County Medical Examiner.

While the 80-year-old homeowner claimed the remains belonged to a Cherokee individual found in an Overton County cave decades ago, a thorough examination by forensic anthropologists Dr. Murray Marks and Dr. Daniel Franklin at the Knox County Regional Forensic Center told a different story.

Key Findings From the Report

• Multiple Individuals: The box contained commingled remains representing a minimum of five different people, including both adults and adolescents.

• Medical Preparation: Nearly every bone displayed razor-thin cut marks from a scalpel, and seven cervical vertebrae were meticulously wired together, indicating they were utilized as anatomical teaching specimens.

• Previous Burial Indicators: An adult female skeleton showed deep post-mortem staining consistent with an embalmed coffin burial, suggesting some bones may have been exhumed decades ago before entering private hands.

• Animal Remains: Investigators also found two non-human animal bone fragments mixed inside the box.

With forensic evidence confirming the remains were historical educational specimens rather than victims of a modern crime or a Native American burial site, officials are shifting focus to final arrangements.
