A local family is expressing profound gratitude to Cumberland County first responders following a house fire on August 21 caused by a faulty electrical cord.

According to a public statement shared by resident Michelle Mullis, the fire originated in the master bedroom of her daughter and son-in-law’s home, resulting in heavy smoke, water, and fire damage that destroyed most of the household’s personal belongings. Despite the devastation, all occupants escaped safely.

Mullis specifically commended Deputy Jordan Winningham of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, who arrived first on the scene. According to fire officials, Deputy Winningham’s swift intervention to suppress the flames before the fire department arrived prevented the house from being a total loss.

The family also extended deep appreciation to the Cumberland County Fire Department and Chief Kerley for their rapid response and professionalism. Mullis emphasized the importance of recognizing first responders for going above and beyond, noting that her daughter and son-in-law’s home is still standing and can be rebuilt thanks to their courage.

While the family remains temporarily displaced, they voiced immense relief and thankfulness that the tragedy did not result in injury or complete structural destruction.
