A former employee was shot and injured by police Tuesday evening inside the Tennessee Department of Human Services office in Madisonville, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).

According to the Madisonville Police Department, officers responded to the office on Anderson Street at 4:53 p.m. following reports of an armed individual inside. Upon arrival, officers located the former employee, who was reportedly armed with two pistols and refused to comply with police commands.

An officer subsequently discharged their weapon, striking the individual. Officers rendered medical aid at the scene until Monroe County EMS, Madisonville Fire and Rescue, and UT Lifestar medics arrived. The injured person was then airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities confirmed that no officers or state employees sustained injuries during the incident. The identity of the injured person has not been released.

In accordance with standard department procedure, the involved officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while the TBI investigates the shooting.
