The Roane County Sheriff’s Office paused this week to remember and honor Officer Jessie Matthew “Matt” Rittenhouse, marking the 22nd anniversary of his tragic death in the line of duty on September 16, 2004.

Officer Rittenhouse lost his life shortly before midnight in an automobile collision when his patrol car went out of control. Authorities at the time attributed the crash to severe weather and rain-slicked roads caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ivan.

At the time of his passing, Officer Rittenhouse had dedicated five years to law enforcement, serving two years with the Roane County Sheriff’s Department and three years with the Harriman Police Department. He is survived by his parents and two sisters.

In a deeply personal reflection shared by his mother, family and fellow officers continue to keep his memory alive through tributes, including a recent memorial left at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington featuring a Superman theme and challenge coin. Loved ones also honored his legacy through participation in the Unity Tour and remembrance during Police Week.

Twenty-two years later, the community and his law enforcement family continue to stand by the sentiment: Gone, but never forgotten.
