SOUTH ROANE COUNTY FIRE CHIEF JAMES MICHAEL CURTIS ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION AFTER NEARLY SIX YEARS
After a remarkable 40-year career in emergency services, South Roane County Volunteer Fire Department (SRCVFD) Fire Chief James Michael Curtis has submitted his resignation, effective November 1, 2026.
Chief Curtis, who led the department for nearly six years, announced his decision in a letter to Board President Mike Morrison, citing a desire to slow down, prioritize his health, and spend more time with his family and on his farm. During his tenure, Curtis helped transform the SRCVFD into what he noted is the top volunteer fire department in the county, improving response times, upgrading equipment, and advancing member training.
Department leadership expressed deep gratitude and full support for Chief Curtis, highlighting his countless hours of sacrifice, steady leadership, and dedication to the community.
To ensure a seamless transition, Curtis will remain in his role through October, assisting with administrative handoffs, equipment inventory, and the orientation of an interim leader. While stepping down from the top post, Curtis has expressed a desire to remain involved with the department as a regular member if permitted by his peers.
