ANDERSON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS RESIDENTS OF RISING PHONE SCAMS AND IDENTITY THEFT

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to remain vigilant following a surge in fraudulent phone calls and identity theft attempts across the area.
Recent reports reveal that scammers are aggressively impersonating law enforcement personnel to extort money. In one incident, callers falsely claimed to represent the Sheriff’s Office Jail Division, demanding a $1,000 payment to resolve a family member’s fictitious DUI charges in exchange for a short ankle-monitor sentence. In another case, a Strawberry Plains resident was targeted by an anonymous caller claiming to be from the “warrants department” demanding money to clear an active warrant.
In addition to phone extortion, criminals are attempting sophisticated identity theft. One resident reported that an unknown individual tried using their driver’s license and Social Security card to secure a $65,000 bank loan, followed by a fraudulent notification claiming approval for a $70,000 loan.
Sheriff Russell Barker emphasizes that these criminals rely heavily on fear, urgency, and deception.
“I want our citizens to understand that they should never send money to someone simply because they claim to represent law enforcement. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly using a verified phone number.”

Key Safety Precautions:

  • Never pay over the phone: Law enforcement will never demand immediate payment to resolve warrants, criminal charges, or keep family members out of jail.
  • Guard personal data: Never share sensitive details—such as your Social Security number, banking information, or date of birth—with unverified callers.
  • Verify independently: Hang up and contact your bank or the Sheriff’s Office directly using official numbers if you suspect a scam.
  • Monitor accounts: Regularly check your credit reports and financial statements for unauthorized activity.
Authorities ask residents to share these warnings with friends, family members, and elderly loved ones who are frequently targeted by these schemes. Anyone who believes they have been targeted is encouraged to report the incident to the Sheriff’s Office immediately.
