AUTHORITIES WARN OF “THIRD PARTY SCAM”

A new scam is going around the region. Authorities are warning residents of what is called “a third party” scam. The victim receives a job application and contract as a “Shipping Agent” for an online company. The “Shipping Agent” is only asked to receive packages, take a photo of the item, then re-ship it to another address. The online company is fake. The item the “Shipping Agent” receives has been purchased with a stolen credit card number. The “Shipping Agent” unwittingly acts as a middle man in the online theft, and keeps the credit card company from tracking the purchase to its actual destination. Police say to avoid responding to such e-mails offering a “shipping agent” job. They say you won’t be paid and could be complicit in an online theft.
