BOMBING ATTEMPT SUSPECT ARRESTED IN BLEDSOE COUNTY

A man wanted by Franklin police in connection to a bombing attempt outside a nursing home Saturday as been arrested, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Mitchell Hunter Oakes, 41, is accused of placing an active explosive device inside the vehicle of a nursing home employee, according to TBI.

Oakes was taken into custody at 9 a.m. Sunday by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents at a home in Bledsoe County.

He was also added to TBI’s ‘s “Top 10 Most Wanted” list Sunday. He faces a charge of attempted first degree murder.

The device was found by an NHC Cool Springs employee who was ending her shift, Franklin police said. State and federal bomb specialists detonated the device safely inside the employee’s car.

“The device was sophisticated and designed to do maximum harm to the intended victim, and would have hurt several others if it had detonated as intended,” said Lt. Charles Warner, Franklin police spokesman. Oakes was wanted on a felony warrant from Virginia on an unrelated incident. Franklin Police Department, TBI and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive were involved in the investigation.

Bond information has not yet been released.
