CAMPING TRIP ARGUMENT TURNS INTO ARMED STANDOFF
On November 27th, deputies were dispatched to Plateau Firetower Road for a 911 hang-up call.
The caller would eventually call back to dispatch and said she wanted to meet the deputies at the Exxon station near the 311 exit.
While on scene the woman told deputies that a camping trip with her boyfriend, Dakota Cooper, turned into a verbal argument that then escalated into a standoff, pistols included.
At one point during the camping trip, the caller got out of a Durango to get back into her vehicle, whereupon her boyfriend used the Durango to block her from leaving. He then hit the caller’s vehicle two to three times with his Durango before exiting it carrying a pistol.
The caller pulled her own pistol out of her vehicle, which is when her boyfriend handed her her cell phone. She then left and called 911.
Sergeant Jason Powers traveled to Plateau Firetower Road to make contact with Cooper and asked about the events that had occurred that night. Cooper denied even owning a Durango, saying he had sold it a week prior. The only thing he would admit to was having an argument.
Cooper was patted down by the deputy and a live .40 caliber handgun round was discovered on his person.
Sgt. Powers then spoke with the neighbor who said that he saw a Durango and another vehicle both backing up in the driveway. The Durango hit the other vehicle in the right rear corner, and after the collision, he heard Cooper and a woman yelling at each other. The neighbor then saw Cooper reaching over the passenger fender with a pistol aimed at the woman and said the woman then pulled out a pistol and aimed hers at Cooper.
According to the neighbor, after the situation de-escalated, the woman started kicking the Durango and left, with Cooper then getting into the Durango and driving toward the end of the road, and shutting off the lights. The neighbor then said that Cooper returned to his residence on foot without the Durango.
Deputy Pencka transported the caller back to the scene so she could show deputies where her boyfriend hid things near the cell tower. The deputy was able to locate the Durango hidden inside a fenced area around the cell tower, no firearms were located inside.
Sgt. Powers later located a Glock 22 .40 caliber with a black frame and green slide and fully loaded magazine inside of a red toolbox after speaking with Cooper’s father at the residence.
Cooper was transported to intake for booking and charged with Aggravated Domestic Assault, False Imprisonment, and Tampering with Evidence.
