CHATTANOOGA MOURNS DEATH OF 5 CHILDREN IN SCHOOL BUS CRASH

According to the latest reports, there have been five confirmed deaths from Monday afternoon’s tragic school bus crash in Chattanooga. Authorities originally said that five students died on the bus and a sixth had passed away at the hospital but police are confirming five students are dead. The driver of the school bus, 24-year-old Johnthony Walker has been charged with five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and reckless driving. All of the children were students at Woodmore Elementary. There were at least 35 students involved in the crash. Hamilton County Interim Superintendent Kirk Kelly said Tuesday the deceased victims included one boy and four girls. Three students were fourth graders, one was in kindergarten and one was in first grade. Six students are currently in the intensive care unit. Six other students are in regular hospital rooms. According to preliminary reports, Walker was driving above the posted 30 mph speed, he lost control and swerved hitting an elevated driveway and mailbox. The bus then swerved to the other side of the road before turning over and striking a utility pole and tree. CBS News is reporting that Walker had exhibited problems with driving in the past. They say that some of the children said that he asked them if “they were prepared to die.” Walker, who was employed by Durham Bus Services, is in jail under a bond of $107,500. Police have requested a search warrant to obtain the bus’s black box. They say the scene is very complicated and spans a large area. Woodmore Elementary remained open Tuesday in order to help grieving students and community members. Counselors were present at the school for support. The school district is working the United Way to help provide funding for the families.
