RESOLUTION CONCERNING CRAB ORCHARD WIND TURBINE PROPOSAL ON IT’S WAY TO NASHVILLE

Several Cumberland County residents are happy today after county commissioners passed a resolution for the state to give consideration to the matter of the placement of wind turbines in Crab Orchard. For most of the year, residents of Fairfield Glade and the surrounding area have been protesting the project which has been proposed by Apex Clean Energy, to place 20 – 23 of the turbines on 1800 acres of land. The group known as Opponents of the Crab Orchard Wind Turbines has been vehemently opposed to the project from the start citing health, economic and environmental problems, but that did not stop the commission from refusing to find the project detrimental to the best interests of the county. The Crossville City Council, along with state officials such as Sen. Lamar Alexander and US Rep. Diane Black have all voiced opposition to the project. Monday night, Commissioner Rebecca Stone introduced a resolution to send to state officials to consider legislation to study the impact of these kind of developments and to require an application process and risk studies prior to approval. Stone said that it was important for citizen’s voices to be heard and that such a project would have a historical impact on the future. A motion was made and seconded with the resolution passing 11-6.
