CHURCH PLACES NEW CHRISTMAS TREE OFF OF I-40 IN ROANE COUNTY

An iconic Christmas tree located on Interstate 40 in Roane County will continue thanks to First Baptist Church of Kingston. The tree, located between exits 352 and 355, had been there for nearly four decades to serve as a reminder to those traveling during the holiday. Truckers and travelers reportedly stopped each year to leave notes of thanks on the Christmas tree. Fred and Anne Walker decorated the tree soon after they relocated to Roane County in 1978. The Walkers continued to decorate it for every Christmas season until 1993. The church youth group took over decorating the tree after the Walkers passed away. But recently, road crews accidentally sprayed it with chemicals causing the tree to die. The church has now planted a cedar tree close to where the original tree was located and decorated it. The church youth group also placed a snowflake ornament on the tree with a picture of the Walkers on it to remember them.
