PROPOSED MEGA SCHOOL IN ROANE COUNTY TOO LARGE FOR SITE

The Roane County School Board continues to pursue plans for a mega high school. The question now is, where will it be constructed? At a recent meeting of the school board, members learned from an architectural firm that the preferred site close to Roane State Community College in Harriman is too small for the school that would be build to hold 1,800 students. Officials say the size of the school combined with parking, a football field and other sports fields will require a large area of land. If the mega school is approved for construction, it will mean the closing of Roane County High School, Rockwood High School and Harriman High School. If the new school is built, officials will look to see how the three that will close can best be used. Midway High School and Oliver Springs High School will not be affected by the addition of the proposed mega school. The architect firm has meeting set in the future with the school system’s executive committee to give updates on the project.
