CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSES REPAIRS TO TEMPERANCE BUILDING IN HARRIMAN

The historic Temperance Building was discussed in the Harriman City Council meeting this week. The popular landmark is aging and in urgent need of major repairs. Mayor Wayne Best wants to restore the building but the cost is estimated around $100,000 and the city budget had an estimated $50,000 in funds for the work. Mayor Best wanted the council to take a couple of more weeks to make a decision and he will get with the city treasurer and see if any extra money is available.

The Temperance Building was originally built by the East Tennessee Land Company in the early 1890’s to serve as their offices as they developed Harriman as a planned Temperance community. Later it served as the home of American University, and has also held several other uses throughout its history.
