CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL APPROVES SPECIAL CITY CENSUS AND PROPERTY TAX FREEZE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

The Crossville City Council approved two matters concerning taxes at Thursday’s meeting. Council Member JH Graham introduced a motion to approve the city do a special city census in order to garner new state shared taxes. Graham said that the city receives the funds based on population which equates to $123 per head in 2017. The last such census was taken in 2014, and Graham stated that when he checked with the Election Commission recently on new voter registrations, he was surprised to find over 900 new residents had registered. Council Member Graham also made a motion to approve a property tax freeze for residents’ 65-years-of age or older if such a tax hike were needed. Any residents eligible for such a freeze would have to re-apply each year. Lastly, Graham tasked interim City Manager Steve Hill to research the possibility of utilizing Caryonah for future water needs such as the recent drought.
