CROSSVILLE MAN ARRESTED FOR DUI, EVADING, AND RESISTING ARREST FOLLOWING TRAFFIC STOP
On the night of April 27, 2026, Sgt. Massey and Ptl. Ramson initiated a traffic stop on a black Nissan Altima after observing the driver, later identified as Ricky Young, exit a Buc-ee’s parking lot through a clearly marked “no exit” entrance. During the pursuit, Mr. Young discarded a cigarette from the window, failed to maintain his lane, and continued driving at a low speed for approximately 90 seconds after emergency lights and sirens were activated. Upon stopping on Cook Rd, Mr. Young proved uncooperative, refusing to exit the vehicle and reaching around the interior despite multiple commands. Once out of the car, he exhibited signs of impairment, including unsteadiness, red watery eyes, dilated pupils, and the odor of alcohol. Though he initially consented to a search of his person and a field sobriety test, he became confrontational and intentionally sabotaged the initial HGN test by refusing to follow the stimulus.
Following a search of the vehicle, which uncovered receipts for alcohol and “magic mushroom” products along with an empty liquor bag, Mr. Young agreed to a second attempt at Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. During this round, Sgt. Massey observed 6 out of 6 clues on the HGN test, 5 out of 10 clues on the Walk and Turn, and 3 out of 4 clues on the One Leg Stand, noting that the suspect repeatedly moved his head, missed heel-to-toe steps, and used his arms for balance. Based on these results, Sgt. Massey determined Mr. Young was under the influence of a mind-altering substance and placed him under arrest.
The encounter escalated at the Cumberland County Justice Center and Cumberland Medical Center after Sgt. Massey obtained a search warrant for Mr. Young’s blood. Mr. Young became physically and verbally aggressive, tensing his body to obstruct the blood draw and necessitating assistance from additional officers. Despite his resistance, a medical professional successfully collected two vials of blood. Mr. Young was ultimately charged with Driving Under the Influence, Evading Arrest, and Resisting Arrest, and issued a summons for Failing to Maintain Lane.
