CROSSVILLE MAN ARRESTED FOR RETAIL THEFT FOLLOWING A STRING OF STORAGE FACILITY BURGLARIES AND DRUG CHARGES
On June 9, 2026, 31-year-old Dakota Dalton Whittington of Crossville was taken into custody following an incident at Obed Plaza on June 8, 2026. According to the Crossville Police Department report, a loss prevention manager provided video evidence of Whittington, who arrived in a U-Haul truck and trailer, stealing a laptop and a backpack totaling $1,177 in value. Security footage showed him moving the items to the garden section, where he allegedly concealed the laptop inside the backpack before exiting the store.
This arrest follows a string of prior criminal charges from March 2026 detailed in the Cumberland County General Sessions Court docket scheduled for today. An investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office linked Whittington to a March 5, 2026, burglary at Advanced Storage on Highway 70 East, where multiple storage units were broken into and the contents were sold to local pawn shops.
Whittington confessed to the break-ins, which resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in stolen property, including $16,320 worth of firearms accessories, tools, and hunting gear, $6,075 in archery and fishing equipment, and $3,049 worth of electronics and tools. Consequently, he faces three counts of burglary and three counts of theft.
Additionally, Whittington faces a separate retail theft charge for stealing a $329 DeWalt drill kit from Lowe’s, as well as a simple possession charge stemming from a March 18, 2026, traffic stop where he claimed ownership of a glass pipe and 3.46 grams of methamphetamine found under his seat.
