CUMBERLAND COUNTY SAYS “NO” TO LAND REGULATION RESOLUTION IN CONNECTION TO PROPOSED CRAB ORCHARD WIND FARM

During a highly controversial meeting Monday night, the Cumberland County Commission voted to not accept a statute that would regulate land use pertaining to the proposed Crab Orchard wind city-people-at-meeting-2farm. The County also stood by its’ guns and refused to find the proposed wind farm detrimental to the best interests of county residents as other local and state officials have. In front of a standing-room-only crowd of wind farm opponents wearing bright red shirts, the commission again heard public comments extolling the harmful nature of wind turbines. On the other hand, commissioners also heard from others who emphatically opposed the proposed land regulation statute, saying that it was only a prelude to zoning. A motion was made and seconded to accept the proposed statute. 1st District interim Commissioner Harry Sabine said that those opposing the wind farm should have taken their battle to the state level, and that the commission did not need to be regulating land. After more discussion, the vote was taken and the resolution was defeated 13-3 with Rebecca Stone, Sandra Dutcher and Woody Geisler voting for. Commissioners Elbert Farley and Sonya Rimmer were absent from the meeting. man-3When the commission voted to not join the others in the condemnation of the wind farm, the audience threw insults and tirades against the commission and had to be rebuked by County Sheriff Casey Cox. Most of the opponents then left the commission chambers while continuing to hurl insults.
