CUMBERLAND COUNTY SHERIFF WARNS OF JURY DUTY SCAMS

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Dept. is warning residents about an old scam that is resurfacing. People are receiving phone calls saying that they failed to report to jury duty and that now there is a warrant out for their arrest. The caller says that the deal can be cleared up right now if you can verify some personal information such as birthdate and social security number. The scammer may even go further demanding that the victim pay the warrant now by giving a credit card or personal information bank account number. Recent victims have been told to go to CVS and get a prepaid card. These numbers have been tracked to New Delhi, India. Don’t be scammed. Courts will not call if you have missed jury duty. Business is strictly done by mail. They will not ask for personal information over the phone, and they will not ask for money because you missed jury duty. Hang up on such callers or immediately call the Sheriff’s Office to ask about such transactions.
