CUMBERLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPT. INVESTIGATING TRIO OF BURGLARIES

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department investigators have had their hands full with a rash of burglaries from vacant properties the past few days.

Saturday afternoon, Cumberland County deputies responded to a home on the 3000 block of Oklahoma Drive, where the traveling homeowners’ son reported things weren’t quite right. Items had been moved around in the home and he had “an uneasy feeling” and decided to investigate. He went to a hidden compartment where his father stored his guns. Every firearm in the home was missing, along with ammunition and miscellaneous jewelry items. Two empty ammunition boxes had been left behind. The parents have identified a possible suspect. Value of the weapons stolen exceeds $5,600.

A property owner returned to a home he owns on the 900 block of Joe Tabor Road Monday to find the doors wide open and several items missing from the home and detached garage. Windows at the front of the house were broken, the glass removed, and dog feces on the floor. Items stolen include appliances, furniture, a Honda push mower, copper piping, a lawnmower motor and the victim’s grandmother’s ashes. Total value of the items stolen is approximately $1,700. There are no suspects at this time.

A woman watching over an out-of-state friend’s property went to the Happy Top Road residence Monday evening and found the home had been burglarized. The front door and garage door were pried open and damaged. A witness reported seeing a suspect riding a zero-turn mower across the back field, toward a damaged barbed-wire fence, towing two kayaks. A flat-screen television was later found hidden behind an old block foundation; one kayak was located in the woods.

Yesterday, following up on the Happy Top Road aggravated-burglary incident, Cumberland County deputies reported seeing tracks from the mower leading up an old road bed to the home of the suspect; the mower was found hidden in the woods behind a home on the 200 block of Happy Top Road. The three incidents are all under investigation.
