ESCAPED TODDLER FOUND NEAR TRAIN TRACKS

A two year old toddler that escaped an Algood daycare facility and was found wandering the railroad tracks is safe, thanks to the intervention of others.  The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning,  when Algood police received a report of a child wandering the railroad tracks beside the roadway.  This was  just before a train came through.

According to the report, two people were passing and pulled over to get the child to safety. About that time, the child ran to a person who was working on maintenance at a nearby apartment complex. The man took the child back to the Kid Kuntry Preschool on Main Street.  An employee verified that a man had come in and handed the child over, and stated that other children were outside at the time the child escaped.  An immediate inspection of the playground and found one door not locked.

Police inspected the log-in sheet to see when parents sign children in and out. This particular child was signed in at 9 a.m. with no signout. When police asked why employees did not notice the child was gone, a worker replied that sometimes parents pick up children for a doctor’s appointment and bring them back later, forgetting to sign them out. She said she assumed that is what happened.

The Department of Children’s Services was already doing an inspection at the daycare and the field supervisor was notified as the incident happened.
