FAIRFIELD GLADE POLICE SERGEANT GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND DUTY TO HELP CITIZEN IN NEED
A Fairfield Glade Police Department sergeant went above and beyond the call of duty to help a needy citizen.
A report states Sgt. Donnie Hammons responded Sunday to a home on Juniper Road to check on a citizen who was not feeling well. A concerned citizen notified police of the male subject in his early 80s.
Sgt. Hammons contacted the man and learned he was sick and did not have fuel in his vehicle to go to a grocery store to buy food. The man said he was out of food, and his car was possibly low on coolant.
He had not eaten in several days and had misplaced his cell phone, unable to call anyone to deliver food. He said he does not see his family often, maybe twice a year.
Sgt. Hammons asked the man if he liked pizza, to which he replied yes.
Sgt. Hammons went to get the man a pizza and something to drink and brought it to him.
Hammons also brought him fuel for his vehicle the next day when Hammons was off duty. He also offered to look at the elderly man’s vehicle to see if there were any issues.
Hammons asked him if he needed medical attention. He said his wrist hurt after an earlier fall but declined medics.
While speaking with him, Hammons noted in his report the man was in a good mindset and had a good recall of his past.
Hammons returned to duty after ensuring the elderly man didn’t need anything else.
A referral was made as a result of the encounter.
