The family of a missing Maryland swimmer has confirmed his body was recovered from Tellico Lake Friday morning .

Fifty-five year-old Michael Carnock, an experienced swimmer, was visiting family in Tellico Village last month. He went for a swim on the morning of May 15 near Jackson Ferry Island. When he failed to return early that afternoon, a search began.

Loudon County Sheriff Tim Guider said Carnock’s wet suit-clad body, bore injuries, but the cause of his death has not yet been determined. “A lot of things could have happened, there’s a lot of variables in this case,” Guider said. “You have a man who was a very avid swimmer. There could have been a cardiac event or cramps, just a lot of things. Still not sure and don’t want to speculate too far.”

Tellico Lake covers 15,000 acres, surrounded by more than 350 miles of shoreline. It’s as deep as 75 feet in places and the search for Carnock had covered a wide area, involving both surface and underwater search teams, as well as a K-9 search unit. A dive team from the Blount County Sheriff’s Office that specializes in underwater cave diving assisted, as did an Air National Guard helicopter and searchers from other agencies.

Carnock’s wife and three sons had returned to Tellico Plains Wednesday, along with family friends, to aid in the search. Early Friday afternoon, the Twitter account @BringMikeHome posted, “It is with a heavy heart that we would like to share Mike’s body was found this morning. Thank you to all the tireless efforts of local agencies and volunteers.”
