FIRES IN EAST TENNESSEE CONTINUE TO BURN, BUT NEARING CONTAINMENT

Gatlinburg, Tenn.–The final update for the Chimney Tops 2 Fire was released on Wednesday, now placing the fire at Chimney Tops 2 at 94% contained and the fire at Cobbly Nob as 96% contained.

Both fires have totaled 17,904 acres in damage and officials believe no further spread of the fire is expected due to rainfall and high humidity. Containment of the fire will increase once aerial reconnaissance of the fire perimeter can be checked to assist crews on the ground.

Starting on Thursday, fires withing the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be handed over to local crews from the South Atlantic Interagency Incident Management Team. Updates and information will be provided by the Sugarlands Visitor Center at (865) 436-1297. Fires outside of the park will be handled by the Tennessee Division of Forestry.
