Sterling Henton, a former starting quarterback for the Tennessee Volunteers from 1987-1990, now faces felony criminal simulation charges. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office says Henton was arrested after attempting to deposit a counterfeit check for more than $95,000 at the Y-12 Federal Credit Union location on Clinton Highway June 13. The check, supposedly originated from a Nashville-based marketing firm. A representative from Coda Ventures told investigators the check did not come from its business.

When investigators spoke with Henton July 3, he is said to have admitted depositing the check and begin aware it was not made out in the appropriate amount.

Wade Davies, Henton’s attorney, released a statement to the media. “Mr. Henton looks forward to showing his innocence. [He] was the victim of an elaborate internet scheme,” the statement read. “Once this is cleared up, Mr. Henton intends to use this experience to education others how to avoid becoming victimized by sophisticated scammers.”

Henton led the Vols to back-to-back SEC titles in 1989 and 1990. He is now employed as an analyst, motivational speaker and DJ. He is the official DJ for the U.T. Volunteers football team.
