The husband of the late Grand Ole Opry star Jean Shepard was stabbed and her granddaughter was killed in an early morning attack Saturday. 79-year-old Benny Birchfield was reportedly stabbed at his home in Hendersonville. Police say Birchfield’s 18-year-old granddaughter, Icie Hawkens, also died from stab wounds. Another man, 21-year-old Travis Sanders, died from a gunshot wound. Birchfield underwent surgery for his injuries and as of Saturday was said to be improving. Birchfield and Shepard married in 1968 and remained together until her death in September of this year. Police have not released a possible motive in the killings but have said they are not looking for suspects.
