HIGH-SPEED I-40 CHASE LEADS TO FELONY CHARGES AND REVOKED BOND FOR CUMBERLAND COUNTY WOMAN
A routine patrol check at a local gas station spiraled into a high-speed interstate pursuit, leaving two patrol cars damaged and a suspect facing multiple felony charges in Cumberland County.
Laura Estevez is set to appear in Cumberland County General Sessions Court on July 21, 2026, for her arraignment following a wild chase that reached speeds of up to 100 mph. Court records indicate her bond has been officially revoked.
According to court affidavits, the incident began in the early morning hours of March 31, 2026, around 3:36 a.m., when patrol officer Corey Freeman spotted Estevez’s gold Ford Expedition at an Exxon gas station on Peavine Road. Knowing Estevez had an active warrant for aggravated assault, the officer attempted to make contact.
Instead of cooperating, Estevez allegedly sprinted to her SUV, accelerated rapidly out of the parking lot, and tore onto Eastbound Interstate 40.
The pursuit quickly intensified as speeds topped triple digits. Cumberland County Sheriff’s Corporal Aytes successfully deployed spike strips, puncturing three of the Expedition’s tires.
Despite running on ruined rubber, Estevez continued to resist:
-
Swerving at Officers: As patrol units attempted to box her in, she swerved into law enforcement vehicles, striking and damaging cars driven by Lt. Dustin Lester and Zach Early.
-
PIT Maneuver: Officers executed a successful Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver around mile marker 338 to bring the vehicle to a halt.
-
Forced Extrication: When Estevez refused to exit the boxed-in SUV, officers smashed her window. According to the affidavit, she closed her eyes and hit the accelerator in an apparent attempt to strike officers before she was forcibly pulled through the window and placed in handcuffs.
Estevez faces several severe charges filed on June 16, 2026, including:
-
Reckless Endangerment – Vehicle (Felony)
-
Evading Arrest Flight – Vehicle
-
Resisting Stop, Arrest, or Search
With her bond revoked in Sessions Court, Estevez remains in custody pending her scheduled July 21 court appearance.
