INMATE DEAD, OFFICER INJURED IN ROBERTSON COUNTY SHOOTING

An inmate who was visiting a facility for a medical appointment this afternoon (Wednesday, June 28, 2017) is dead and a corrections officer was hurt after a shooting. The Robertson County Sheriff’s Department says the inmate attacked the officer during a visit to Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s 100 Oaks Campus. Deputies say the inmate was being taken for a medical appointment when he grabbed the deputy’s gun and fired. A second deputy who was helping was able to return fire, hitting the inmate, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. Metro police say the deputy is critically injured. The inmate’s identity has not yet been released as of 4 pm central this afternoon.
