JONATHAN WAYDE RUSSELL FACES SENTENCING FOLLOWING WILD HIGH-SPEED CHASE AND BIZARRE TRIAL DEFENSE

CROSSVILLE POLICE ARREST MAN AT DOLLAR GENERAL STORE FOR DRUG INDUCED P.I.
Jonathan Wayde Russell is scheduled for a court report and motion for a new trial hearing in the Cumberland County Circuit Court on September 15, 2026, following his conviction on multiple felony charges stemming from an October 5, 2023 incident.
The case began when Russell stole a 1998 GMC Jimmy valued over $2,500 from a local Bakery Outlet parking lot. When Crossville Police Lt. Larry Qualls attempted a traffic stop, Russell triggered a high-speed pursuit, weaving through local roadways, ignoring traffic signals, running stop signs, and endangering bystanders. The dangerous chase ultimately ended in a multi-vehicle crash that injured another motorist and totaled the stolen truck, after which Russell had to be extricated from the wreckage and revived with Narcan before being airlifted to a trauma center.
A Cumberland County grand jury formally indicted Russell on January 8, 2024, on three felony counts:
  • Theft of Property ($2,500 to $10,000)
  • Evading Arrest (Risk of death or injury, vehicle involved)
  • Reckless Endangerment (Vehicle/Felony)
Rejecting a 12-year plea deal against his attorney’s advice, Russell took the stand at trial and offered a bizarre defense to the jury. He claimed that he had nothing to do with the Freemasons but was targeted by unknown assailants who “electro-chloroformed” him, causing him to completely blackout during the entire sequence of events.
The jury rejected the claim, deliberating for just 25 minutes before finding him guilty on all counts. Represented by defense attorney Jeff Vires, Russell now faces up to 30 years in prison due to prior convictions when he returns to court for his sentencing and motion for a new trial.
