LEE LAWSON CHOSEN AS NEW CROSSVILLE INTERIM CITY MANAGER

At a Special-Called meeting of the Crossville City Council Tuesday, one interim city manager was ousted and another one appointed. City Mayor James Mayberry had originally called for the meeting over the weekend. At the meeting Mayberry made a motion to call for the removal of Steve Hill from the position “due to pending litigation, revelations at a Personnel Board Meeting and apparent conflicts with city employees.” The motion was seconded by Council Member Scott Shanks. During discussions, Council Member JH Graham asked for the minutes from the Personnel Board meeting and was told that HR Director Leah Crockett hadn’t gotten around to transcribing them yet due to the two-hour length of the meeting. But Crockett did inform the council that the board had upheld the MTAS opinion that, although some of the grievances brought against Hill had merit, they were not presented within the 20-day deadline that is put forth in the city’s handbook. Council Member Danny Wyatt told Mayor Mayberry that he could not understand his knee-jerk reaction in the ouster. Mayberry quoted Wyatt’s own words used during the firing of previous city manager David Rutherford. That he (Mayor Mayberry) “had lost faith in Hill’s ability.” Mayor Mayberry also stated that during the time two years ago when he ran for office, he had heard concerns from employees of the Parks & Recreation Dept. about the way Hill was running things while he was director. Council Member Scott Shanks said that to keep Steve as interim city manager is not a business but a personal choice, and that the council was placing the city “at risk if we keep him.” The council passed a motion for a call for question and then voted Hill out with Shanks, Graham and Mayberry voting for and Danny Wyatt voting against. With that Mayberry submitted City IT Director Lee Lawson to be interim city manager. He was appointed on a 3-1 vote. Council Member Pamela Harris was absent from the meeting.
