MAN ARRAIGNED IN COURT FOR VEHICULAR ASSAULT
A North Carolina man allegedly responsible for a head-on vehicle accident in Cumberland County earlier this year appeared in criminal court yesterday (Monday, November 6, 2017) for arraignment. The Tennessee Highway Patrol says a 2012 Ford F-250 driven by 47-year-old Steven L. Shults of Pittsboro, North Carolina was driving the wrong way on Interstate 40 and side-swiped a 2015 Dodge pickup pulling a trailer which jack-knifed also coming to rest in the median. As Shults continued on, he struck a 2000 Toyota 4 Runner head-on. The driver of the Toyota, 22-year-old Courtney D. Howe of Knoxville, was airlifted to UT Medical Center for treatment of injuries. She was restrained. Shults was also flown to UT for treatment. Yesterday in court, Shults arraigned on grand jury indictments for vehicular assault, DUI, reckless endangerment and possession of a handgun while under the influence. The judge set a return court date of January 24, 2018 for Shults.
