A Sparta man died last week from injuries he sustained in a rollover accident that happened on Dec. 29. The Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated that crash on Smithville Highway. 38-year old Dennis Shane Elrod and a female passenger were traveling east at a speed of 85-90 mph, when Troopers say the vehicle skidded sideways, hit an embankment and began rolling over. Elrod, who was unrestrained, was ejected from the 1998 Pontiac Firebird. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital and then airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. The female was wearing a seatbelt and was unharmed. Elrod passed away from his injuries on Jan. 4^th. The investigating trooper said that no drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash and that speed was the contributing factor.
