MORE DETAILS ON ESCAPE AND CAPTURE OF WORK DETAIL INMATE
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department released more information today regarding the escape and capture of an inmate on a work detail.
The prisoners were picking up trash yesterday afternoon on Highway 70 West at Pomona Road when 53-year-old Michael Eugene Norris of Crossville ran off. Numerous deputies converged on the area and started looking for him.
A couple of hours later, a deputy received information that Norris was in the driveway of a residence on the 3,400 block of Old Highway 70 wanting to surrender. Law enforcement arrived to see Norris with his hands over his head and took him into custody without incident. He was charged with escape. He is currently being held without bond and will appear on the offense in general sessions court soon.
Norris was serving the remainder of a two year sentence in criminal court and 10 months from general sessions.
The sheriff’s department says Norris has an extensive criminal record including the following charges from 1998 to present day (several of these are multiple time offenses):
Aggravated assault
DUI
Simple possession of drugs
Possession of a firearm while intoxicated
Domestic assault
Possession of a Schedule IV drug
Vandalism
Criminal trespassing
Driving on a revoked or suspended license
Leaving the scene of an accident
Violation of probation
Shoplifting
Violation of bond conditions
Theft of property
Possession of a Schedule II drug
Violation of an order of protection
Failure to appear in court
Manufacture sale and delivery of meth
Unlawful possession of a weapon
