Attorneys for a Roane County woman who allegedly hired a hitman to kill the father of her son have filed a motion for a continuance in the case. Court officials say Laura Ann Buckingham was set to go to trial November 28, 2017, but her attorney Joseph Fanduzz says that the date is too soon. A Roane County grand jury indicted Buckingham on a criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder charge after hearing evidence in the case. Buckingham relocated to Kingston, Tennessee from Indiana in late 2015. That is when authorities say she allegedly asked her live-in boyfriend, Joseph Chamblin, to help her hire someone to kill Sutherland, who was still in Indiana. Reportedly, Buckingham had become frustrated with a custody arrangement that required her to drive to Indiana once per week to drop off her 3-year-old son with his father, Sutherland. Buckingham was also reportedly concerned that Sutherland was going to attempt to gain full custody of their son. Buckingham was later arrested after Chamblin reportedly provided Roane County officers with digital recordings that he made of Buckingham asking him to help her have Sutherland killed. Chamblin, who became infamous for an incident in Afghanistan in which he and other Marines urinated on dead Taliban fighters, thought Buckingham’s request at first was a joke but became concerned after she made repeated requests and asked if he knew anyone from the military who would help with the murder. Both Chamblin and Buckingham are former Marines. A TBI agent posed as a contract killer and Buckingham allegedly gave him $3,000 to kill Sutherland. She was then arrested, taken to the Roane County jail and placed under $150,000 bond. She later entered a plea of not guilty.
