MYSTERY OF LOVE LETTERS FOUND IN OLD DRESSER COULD BE SOLVED

(ORIGINAL STORY) – A Caryville, Tennessee woman recently purchased an old dresser and discovered a lifetime of someone else’s memories hidden inside.

Mary Gorman bought the dresser off a man who was set up selling items on the side of the road. When she took it home, she discovered love letters hidden inside as she was cleaning it.

I just flipped them over and started looking up inside of it and something caught my attention,” she said.

Gorman saw a little piece of paper shoved in the dresser. She pulled it out and discovered there were a handful of love letters packed inside a hidden part of the dresser.

This one is dated June 3, 1964,” Gorman said.

I’ve included my picture and will send you a better one sometime when school starts,” one of the letters reads.

The letters were sent from a 14-year-old girl (Jayne Stephens) in Lewisville, Indiana to an 18-year-old boy (Denver Clifton) in Corryton, Tennessee (northeastern Knox County).

The handwriting on the letters was difficult to read, and Gorman said she had trouble making out the names and what is said, leaving her with something of a mystery on her hands.

Gorman told 105.7 News, “So I’m just really curious did they ever meet again? Did she ever come in from Indiana and find him? I remember when I was young I was 14 right into a boy here in Tennessee that was 18 so my curiosity is up whatever happened to them.”

Gorman is now looking for those answers.

One of the envelopes found was addressed to a Denver Clifton who lived in Corryton, Tennessee in the mid 1960’s. Clifton would be in his early 70’s present day.

(STORY UPDATE) – After posting this story, 105.7 News started research first on Denver Clifton. After a day, this newsroom was able to find out about Clifton.

Denver was born in 1945 and unfortunately passed away in 2005 of natural causes. He was living in Jefferson County, Tennessee at the time of his death. Denver was an Army veteran. He married his first wife in 1983. Ironically, the search of Clifton revealed a local tie. Records state he married his second wife in 1996 in Cumberland County, Tennessee.

Now, the big question is…….what happened to Jayne Stephens?

One of our 1057news.com readers, Rickey Godfrey of Nashville, came to our assistance in solving this mystery.

Godfrey is not only a musician in Nashville but specializes in genealogy research.

I saw your story about the letters in the dresser and after I researched, this is what I’ve found,” said Godfrey.

It appears that Stephens may have written the letters when she was 12 or 13, not 14 as first indicated. She turned 13 a week after the June 3, 1964 letter was written to Clifton.

Stephens was born in Lewisville, Indiana (where the letters was mailed from and a town with a population of around 350) and like Clifton, was married twice. She is still alive present day and still resides in Indiana.

105.7 News forwarded all the information that Rickey sent to Mary Gorman, the lady who purchased the old dresser. Rickey was able to get Janye’s address so that Mary can possibly contact her about the letters she found.
