OFFICERS RESPOND TO POSSIBLE EXPLOSIVE DEVICE FOUND IN VEHICLE

Yesterday, Tennessee Highway Patrol Special Operations was notified of a traffic stop conducted by Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD). The stop involved a possible improvised explosive device (IED) sitting in plain view on the front seat. The area was cleared, and a perimeter was established. Upon arrival, troopers deployed the robot in order to investigate the vehicle. An x-ray of the suspected device was conducted. The troopers could not rule out or confirm if the device was a hoax or live explosive device. The decision was made to remotely remove the device out of the vehicle, place it on the ground, and perform a general disruption of the device using a backstop that was devised of dry sweep bags that was supplied to THP by the Murfreesboro Fire Department. Once officers shot the device, they utilized the robot’s camera system to perform a 360 degree scan of the area in attempt to locate the disrupted device. Trooper Jason Johnson was able to locate the components. Trooper Zachary Newton then verified that render safe procedures were complete and conducted a secondary sweep of the suspect’s vehicle for any additional suspected devices. Once the all clear was given, Special Operations members along with ATF Nashville who responded to the scene gathered all of the components for evidence collection. ATF Nashville is actively investigating the case and they along with MPD will charge the subject accordingly. The entire event went without incident or injury.
