POLICE CHIEF CLEARED STILL CONTROVERSY BREWS IN ALGOOD

A sticky situation in Algood has cleared up for the chief of police but the same cannot be said for two city council members. The Herald Citizen says that a hastily special-called meeting on Jan. 23rd by council members Jennifer Green, Kirk Dyer and Carolyn Norris could have been an attempt to fire Chief Gary Harris. But the meeting was cancelled at the last minute. Mayor Scott Bilbrey said that the meeting appeared to have been called in retaliation for the chief’s disciplining of a city investigator who allegedly had compromising pictures of himself and other women on his city-issued cell phone. A city councilwoman interjected herself into the investigation and it was later discovered that she had been in a romantic relationship with the officer in question. Another police officer has claimed that he was terminated by the same three council members who called for Chief Harris’s firing. The investigator, who resigned under pressure, also reportedly had sexual conduct with two other city employees on city time, both of whom have been recently fired by Bilbrey. The mayor believes that the investigator sought aid from the council members which violates city policy. Mayor Bilbrey said the scandal should not cast a shadow on the city, its employees or its citizens.
