POWER OUTAGE IMPACTS OVER 33,000 VEC CUSTOMERS IN CUMBERLAND CO.

It certainly was a busy day for power crews across the state yesterday, especially in Cumberland County. VEC crews responded to scattered outages Saturday morning that knocked out power to many. But was a small prequel for what was coming. Just after 1 p.m. a transformer on a feeder line at the Crossville substation malfunctioned resulting in over 33,000 VEC customers being without power. The outage also knocked power out to numerous businesses and traffic lights in Crossville. Vehicle accidents were reported at some intersections in the city because of traffic lights being down. Repair crews responded to try to reroute power and battled moderate to heavy rainfall at times complicated with wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour from a passing storm system. Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency opened the community complex at 5:30 p.m. yesterday for those who needed power. Around 7 p.m. last night, VEC crews brought the number of customers out to just over 500. After 7:30 p.m. nearly all power was restored.
