ROANE COUNTY JAIL EXPANSION NOT FUNDED IN UPCOMING FISCAL YEAR BUDGET
The Roane County Commission made several cuts to the upcoming fiscal year budget. One of them is taking out a $23 million jail expansion. The facility is certified to hold 170 inmates and faced overcrowding issues several times. However, the COVID-19 pandemic helped the problem. In order to prevent the spread of the virus, the Tennessee Supreme Court ordered judicial officials to come up with plans to reduce the population in jails. Since then, the facility in Kingston has been below capacity.
