SHERIFF’S OFFICE RELEASES THEIR REPORT OF PLANE CRASH NEAR HINCH MOUNTAIN

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department released their report today of a fatal plane crash Tuesday. It states shortly after the aircraft took off from the airport, the pilot, 34-year-old Vasile Ghelan, contacted his flight instructor explaining he was experiencing engine trouble.

Soon after, the plane went down.

Crews from the Cumberland and Roane County sheriff’s office, Crossville and Cumberland County firefighters, the Cumberland County Rescue Squad and Tennessee Highway Patrol all covered the area for several hours looking for the plane. It was located in a wooded area about ¾ of a mile from a farm off of the 2,900 block of Old Highway 28.

The body of the pilot was recovered from burnt wreckage and transported to the medical examiner’s office in Nashville. The report states because of the totality of the circumstances, there is no reason to believe the deceased is anyone other than Ghelan. He was the sole occupant of the aircraft.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident.
