SINKHOLE CLOSES ROANE COUNTY HIGHWAY 72 AS MORE RAIN THREATENS AREA

Roadway issues are already impacting Roane County ahead of more potential rain this evening, highlighted by the complete closure of Roane County Highway 72 this afternoon due to a sinkhole. Located between Laurel Bluff Road and High Ridge Road just east of Midway High School, the closure forced a lengthy detour.

South Roane County Fire Chief Mike Curtis noted that his department was not notified of the closure by county officials, but expressed gratitude that no emergency calls required transit through the affected area. Repair crews began working early this morning, and officials expect the roadway to reopen later today with at least a gravel surface, though permanent paving may not be finished until tomorrow.

In the meantime, motorists are strongly encouraged to exercise caution and remain alert for changing conditions, particularly with additional rainfall in the forecast.
