STATE HO– USE PASSES BILL TO ALLOW ADULTS TUITION-FREE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

A bill has passed the state House that would allow older adults that do not have a degree, to attend community college for free. The legislation mirrors that of Tennessee Promise which lets new high school graduates to receive in-like benefits. The state currently offers free tuition to all adults at Tennessee’s technical schools. The program, which will be funded through the Lottery, is expected to cost the state $11 million after it is fully implemented. The Senate will have to pass the bill which would then head to the governor’s desk for approval. If the bill becomes law, both full and part-time students would be eligible to participate as early as fall 2018.
