STATE LAWMAKERS STALL GOVERNOR’S TRANSPORTATION FUNDING PROPOSAL AGAIN

State lawmakers have again stalled Gov. Bill Haslam’s transportation funding proposal for another week in the House while they decide when the timing would be right to vote on the issue. The governor’s plan consists of raising taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel to help with infrastructure needs across the state. It would also decrease the sales tax on groceries, and decrease taxes on earnings from stocks, bonds, and corporate taxes. Changes proposed are to remove the fuel tax hikes in favor of designating a portion of sales tax collections to pay for road projects. Legislators are worried that the gas tax increase could be re-introduced to the bill at a later time in either the House or Senate and so the vote has been delayed until next week.
