TENNESSEE PHYSICIANS SEEING INCREASE IN BROWN RECL– USE CALLS AND CASES

Medical professionals throughout the state are saying that they are getting increased calls and seeing more patients concerning brown recluse spider bites, especially in children. They say that symptoms vary from patient to patient: from a small red mark or blister, to a rash and fever to sores and even hemolysis, the breaking down of red blood cells, in rare cases which can lead to a life-threatening situation. The Brown Recluse is more prevalent at night and is not considered aggressive. But they will bite if they feel threatened. Preventive measures include getting rid of clutter, keeping your home clean and using spider traps. If you’re bitten and have reddening skin, blistering, itching, pain, a fever, rash or nausea, call the Tennessee Poison Center at 800-222-1222 and seek medical treatment.
