Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd plans to leave UT

Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd told teammates Sunday night that he plans to transfer to another school, Volunteers head coach Butch Jones confirmed Monday.  Hurd, a preseason All-SEC selection, has rushed for 451 yards and three touchdowns in seven games this season despite battling injury. However, he has lost playing time as the season has progressed to fellow junior Alvin Kamara and sophomore John Kelly.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Hurd rushed for 1,288 yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2015. He totaled at least 22 carries in three of the Volunteers’ first four games this season, but reportedly suffered a concussion against Georgia on Oct. 1 and has seen his production and workload decline.

Hurd had just eight carries for 16 yards last Saturday in a 24-21 loss to South Carolina, the Volunteers’ third straight defeat. Kamara missed that game due to injury, and Kelly ran for 94 yards on a team-high 14 carries.

Tennessee was 5-0 and ranked No. 9 nationally as recently as Oct. 8, but has lost three straight games against Texas A&M, Alabama and South Carolina to fall to third in the SEC East Division.
