Tennessee will see the state’s first snow of the season on Thursday and Friday.  Though some might just see light flurries, cold ground temps along with the fact it’s the first snow of the season could cause travel problems. The potential for snow for the mid-state will start Thursday mid-afternoon and run through Friday afternoon.

Snow showers will move in from the Northwest, beginning is Southern Kentucky on Thursday afternoon. Snow showers as far south as the I-40 corridor are possible by Thursday night. Lingering showers will continue early into Friday morning across the mid-state and could last into the early afternoon with a few tenths of an inch of additional accumulation.

Areas to the south will have a small chance of being clipped by a larger system moving through on Friday night into Saturday. This could impact Cumberland Plateau residents with an additional inch of accumulation for a total of two inches in the area a possibility.

A dusting to 1 inch of accumulation is possible for much of the area, though the Plateau could see slightly higher totals. The light snowfall could pose issues for commuters during the Thursday evening and Friday drives. Some traffic problems for the Plateau could linger through Saturday.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has started to brine highways on Wednesday morning in anticipation of the snowfall. Highways to the north of I-40 will be treated on Wednesday and the Department of Public Works will treat State Roads.
