TENNESSEE’S POPULATION GROWING FASTER THAN NATIONAL AVERAGE

Tennessee’s population is growing at a rate faster than the national average and is among the Top 20 in the nation. New U.S. Census bureau data recording population growth since the 2010 census shows Tennessee has seen a 5.8 percent increase in population since 2010. From April 1, 2010, to Jan. 1, the state has added 369,689 residents. That ranks Tennessee 20th in the nation in terms of percentage (5.8 percent) of population growth. As for actual population growth rankings, the 369,689 new residents places Tennessee 12th in the nation. In 2017, Tennessee saw a 1 percent change in population, the largest one-year increase since 2010.

The nation as a whole saw a population increase of 0.7 percent in 2017. Since 2010, the nation as a whole has seen a 5.9 percent increase, just barely above what the state has seen during that time period. Texas led all states with the largest population increase since the 2010 census with over 3 million new residents. The state was followed by California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, New York, Virginia, and Tennessee. I
